Wardrobe Tools for Accessibility

Introduction
Organizing your wardrobe can be challenging, especially if you have mobility limitations, chronic pain, or difficulty reaching certain areas.

This curated list includes tools designed to make your closet and drawers more accessible and functional. Whether you need help reaching high spaces, avoiding bending, or keeping everything within easy reach, these tools are here to help.

Below, you’ll find products categorized by their purpose, so you can quickly find the right solutions for your needs.

1. Tools for Reaching and Managing High Spaces

Pull-Down Closet Rods

Servetto ClosetPro Central Wall-Mounted Pull-Down Rod
Adjustable rods that allow you to lower hanging clothes to a comfortable height to grab them off the rod. This works great if you have long clothes like dresses that need a lot of vertical space to hang properly. Otherwise, a rod that’s mounted lower is easier to use, and more cost-effective.

Adjustable Clothes Rack Cart

Honey-Can-Do Adjustable Height and Width Rolling Metal Clothes Rack
These adjustable clothing racks are a great option for a standalone clothing rack if you need more hanging space, and have the extra room for it. The big advantage of this one is that it is adjustable so that you can put it at a height that’s comfortable for you. It’s also lightweight and rolls around easily.

Extra Rod for Hanging

Simple Houseware Adjustable Closet Hanging Rod
Add a second level of hanging space with an adjustable rod, which can almost your closet’s capacity depending on what you hang. This is a no-brainer if you hang a lot of clothes and want more space. For accessibility, this also works by lowering the height of your hung clothes.

Note: Make sure your top rod can handle the extra weight if you’re going to use the rod design above.

If you want to make sure that you don’t overload the top rod, you can also consider adding a second row that is screwed into the closet walls on its own to lighten the load. Here’s a great option: https://amzn.to/3VxhS7V

Step Stools with Handles

Cosco Step Stool with Handle
Lightweight stools with built-in handles for added stability when reaching high shelves. This can be a great option if you’re comfortable stepping up on the stool to reach for infrequently used clothes, or ones that are stored higher up. Don’t use this for your primary clothes.

Long-Handled Grabbers

2-Pack 34 Inch Extra Long Grabber Reacher with Rotating Jaw
Tools with a grip claw for retrieving items from high up, or from deep shelves. Again, great for less frequently used clothes or out of season clothes, but not ideal for your daily wardrobe which should be in hands reach.

2. Tools for Avoiding Bending and Low Storage Challenges

Rolling Cart With Clear Drawers

IRIS USA Plastic Drawer Storage Organizer Rolling Cart,
Portable cart with drawers that keep frequently used items at waist height. This can be added in addition to your regular space. These are also available with shelves or a hanging rod.

Slide-Out Drawer Organizers

Closet Organizers and Storage
Bins or trays that slide out easily, perfect for bottom shelves or drawers so that you don’t need to bend over and stretch so deeply into them to find what you need.

Elevated Storage Boxes

SNSLXH 5 Pack Stackable Closet Organizer Box
Stackable bins or drawers that lift items to a more accessible height. These particular ones slide out as well, so you get the benefit of not having to bend over so much to access the items in the back.

Organizing Boxes

Amazon Basics Cloth Organizing Boxes
Boxes are great for organizing all your clothes whether it is on shelves, in drawers, or elsewhere. They work especially great for rolls and file folding since they support the garments and keep them from falling over when placed vertically. In addition to this, they work like shelf and drawer dividers by designating areas for specific uses. For accessibility, you can also pull them out easily to see what’s in there, or in order to fold your laundry before placing them back into your space.

3. Tools for Simplifying Hanging Clothes

Clip-Style Hangers

Zober Velvet Hangers with Clips – Pack of 20
Hangers with clips for securing pants, skirts, or delicate items. Easy to use for limited grip strength since you can just pull the garments off. Also easy to put back on. Use for pants, skirts, shorts, and other bottoms or accessories.

Wide-Grip Hangers

Plastic Extra Wide Suit Hangers, Pack of 15
Ergonomic hangers with larger handles for easier gripping and garment placement. While these are generally used for suit jackets, they work fantastic on other garments as well. The only drawback: They take up more room than thinner hangers.

4. Tools for Accessories and Smaller Items

Hooks

Command Folding Clothes Hanger
There are many options out there if you want to add hanging space for jewelry, bags, scarves, or lightweight items without damaging walls. These particular ones are great because they can handle a quite a bit of weight, allowing you to hang up to 5 hangers onto the hook. Make sure to not overload them, though.

5. Tools for Labeling and Visual Organization

Large Print Labels

Avery Removable ID Labels
Maintain order by labeling bins, shelves, and drawers for easy identification. These are great because you can both write on them with a pen and use them in your printer. They are also large so that you can write in big letters to more easily identify what’s inside the box or space.

Color-Coded Bins

Nicunom 6 Pack Small Cubby Bins Storage Bins with Lids
Store seasonal clothes in colored bins so you can easily distinguish between them. These are made of pretty hard plastic, so you can be sure that your clothes are safe. Also, they are rather small, but they come with lids, which is why I like these particular ones.

Transparent Storage Bins

IRIS USA 32 Quart Stackable Plastic Storage Bins with Lids and Latching Buckles
Store seasonal clothes or items you’re unsure about in clear bins so you can easily see what’s inside. These are made of pretty hard plastic, so you can be sure that your clothes are safe, but there are cheaper fabric options available that will work just as well for most.
