  7. How Many Clothes Did...

How Many Clothes Did You Actually Wear Last Trip? (Be Honest.)

Pull up the photos from your last trip. Look at what you wore.

Be honest about how many distinct outfits you actually used.

For most people, it is 3 to 5. Even on a 7-day trip.

You wore the same 3 to 5 outfits on rotation. Everything else came home unworn. Plan the next trip for the wear pattern, not for the closet.

My viewers have taught me as much as I’ve taught them, the photo audit is the single most useful exercise for breaking the overpacking habit.

The photo audit.

Open last trip’s photos. Note the outfit in each photo where you can see what you are wearing.

Group by distinct outfit. Count.

Almost always: 3 to 5 distinct outfits across a 7-day trip. The same favorites in rotation.

What this means for next trip.

Pack the 3 to 5 favorites you actually wear. Add 1 backup. Stop there.

That is the full clothing list. Everything else was insurance against trips you are not taking.

The math behind your habit.

You wear what you like, in the colors you like, in the cuts that flatter. That set is small.

The “variety” pieces you packed but did not wear were not your style. They sat in the bag, came home, went back in the closet, will sit out next trip too.

The system that uses the audit.

The 10-step Space-Saving Travel Packing Method I built over those 12+ years of traveling half the year explicitly references your last-trip wear pattern in Step 1.

You stop packing for a fictional version of yourself.

Pack the 3 to 5 favorites you actually wore. Skip the rest.

Be honest. The photos do not lie about your wear pattern.
