The First Thing to Remove If You Cannot Close Your Suitcase

The bag will not close.

You have to take something out.

Time is short.

You stare at the pile and freeze. Every item feels essential, even though clearly something is not.

There is a single rule for which item leaves first. You can apply it in 10 seconds.

The first thing to remove is the second pair of jeans.

Almost always.

It is the worst space-to-utility ratio in any travel bag.

I’ve weighed my carry-on at hundreds of check-in counters, the second pair of jeans is the most common over-pack. Removing it usually closes the bag.

Why jeans go first.

Jeans are heavy, thick, hard to compress, and slow to dry. The second pair takes up the volume of 4 t-shirts and rarely gets worn.

You will wear one pair on the plane (or all week). The second is insurance against a coffee spill that probably will not happen.

The 5-second triage if it is not jeans.

If you do not have jeans in the bag, the next-to-go items in order are:

The second pair of dress shoes.

The “just in case” sweater you packed when the forecast already said warm.

The novel you might read but probably will not.

The third workout shirt for the gym you might visit.

The pattern these share.

Each is a hypothetical-trip item. It exists in your bag because you were preparing for a version of the trip you are not actually taking.

Removing it does not reduce your real trip’s quality. It just removes the parallel-universe trip’s quality.

The full triage logic lives in the 10-step Space-Saving Travel Packing Method I built over those 12+ years of traveling half the year.

The second pair of jeans.
