I Only Have a Personal Item. Can I Pack a Full Trip?

You booked basic economy. The ticket only includes a personal item, no carry-on, no checked bag.

Just one small bag that has to fit under the seat in front of you.

And you are looking at everything you want to bring thinking there is absolutely no way.

It is going to fit. I promise.

I’ve packed at 6am, at midnight, in airports, in hotel rooms, I have packed full week-long trips into a personal-item-only bag more times than I can count.

What to do right now:

First, check your airline’s exact personal item dimensions. Most allow 18 x 14 x 8 inches but some budget carriers are tighter.

Second, wear your bulkiest items on the plane.

Jacket, sneakers or boots, heaviest pants.

Anything on your body is not luggage.

Third, plan outfits by activity, not by day. One casual outfit, one nice outfit, one active outfit.

Three bottoms and five tops gives you more combinations than seven full outfits.

Fourth, switch toiletries to under-100-ml bottles. Decant from what you already use at home.

Your own products in small bottles beat anything you would buy at the airport.

Fifth, roll everything tight, not flat-fold. Tight rolls cut each item by roughly half.

Heaviest items at the bottom, lightest on top.

Personal item only sounds extreme.

It is not.

It is just a different decision sequence.
