I Forgot to Buy a Checked Bag. Now What?

This post may contain affiliate links. Learn more.

You booked a cheap flight.

The ticket only includes a carry-on and a personal item.

No checked bag.

Now you are staring at everything you need to bring, wondering how any of it is going to fit.

This happens more than you think. Budget airlines make most of their margin on baggage add-ons, and the gate fee for a checked bag is usually $50 to $100.

You do not have to pay it.

Since I started the Organizing TV channel back in 2020, I have packed full week-long trips with just a carry-on and a personal item. You can too.

What to do right now, before you pack anything:

First, check your airline’s size limits for both bags.

Most carry-ons allow 22 x 14 x 9 inches and personal items 18 x 14 x 8.

That is more space than you think when you use both deliberately.

Second, wear your bulkiest items on the plane.

Jacket, boots, heaviest jeans.

They do not count as luggage when they are on your body.

Third, split your packing between the two bags with a plan.

Clothes and shoes in the carry-on.

Toiletries, electronics, documents, and one change of clothes in the personal item.

Fourth, cut clothing to one outfit per activity type, not per day. Two tops that work with one bottom gives you variety without volume.

Fifth, roll everything tight, not flat-fold it. Tight rolls cut each item’s volume by roughly half.

Heavier items go on the bottom of the carry-on, lighter on top.

Between both bags, you have plenty of room. The trick is deciding what goes in before you start packing.

Why this saves you the fee permanently.

Once you know you can fit a week into a carry-on plus personal item, the checked bag becomes optional forever. Every future budget flight is $50 to $100 cheaper.

The 5 steps above are a compressed slice of my 10-step Space-Saving Travel Packing Method. The full system walks you through the decision process so you never have to guess what fits.

It takes about 2 hours the first time. After that, skipping the checked bag becomes the default.
