How to Dress to Flatter Your Butt Shape (A Guide for Every Shape)

You tried on jeans that looked amazing on someone else, and they did nothing for you.

That is not your body’s fault.

It is a shape mismatch.

The difference between jeans that flatter and jeans that flatten comes down to four details: rise, pocket placement, seam construction, and fabric. Each butt shape needs a different combination, and most people have never been told which one is theirs.

Every shape has clothes that make it look great. Round, flat, square, heart-shaped, V-shaped: each one has specific fits that work with the proportions instead of against them.

Here is what works for each shape.

TL;DR: The right jeans for your butt shape come down to four details: rise, pocket placement, seam construction, and fabric. Round, flat, square, heart, and V-shaped each pair best with a specific combination of those four.

The Common Butt Shapes

Most people fall into one of five categories. Check which one matches what you see from the side and behind.

Round: The butt is evenly curved from all angles.

The widest point is in the center of the cheek, and the curve is smooth from waist to thigh.

Sometimes called a “bubble butt.”

Flat: The butt has minimal projection from the back. The line from lower back to thigh is relatively straight without a pronounced curve.

Square: The butt has width, but the top and bottom of the cheek are roughly the same width, creating a boxy appearance. The curves at the sides are minimal.

Heart-shaped (A-shape): The butt is fuller at the bottom and narrower at the top. The widest point is below the center of the cheek, creating an inverted triangle shape.

V-shaped (inverted triangle): The butt is wider at the top near the hips and narrower at the bottom. This often corresponds to wider hip bones and less fullness in the lower glute area.

Round Butt: What Works

A round butt already has the shape that most jeans are designed to create. The trick is choosing fits that follow the curve without flattening it.

Jeans and pants

  • Mid-rise to high-rise keeps the waist defined without cutting into the curve
  • Stretch denim with 1-3% elastane follows the curve instead of compressing it
  • Medium-sized back pockets centered on each cheek. Large pockets flatten, and small pockets get lost
  • Bootcut or straight-leg from the knee down balances the curve with a wider base

Skirts and dresses

  • Pencil skirts follow the round shape perfectly and show the curve from the side
  • A-line skirts with a fitted waist flare from the widest point and complement the shape
  • Bodycon dresses in stretch fabric show the full silhouette

What to avoid

  • Pocket flaps or bulky pocket details that add bulk to an already full shape
  • Very low-rise pants that cut across the widest part and distort the roundness

Flat Butt: What Works

A flat butt benefits from details that create the illusion of more curve and projection.

Jeans and pants

  • High-rise with a curved yoke seam because the seam follows a rounded path across the back, creating the visual impression of a curve even when the shape is flat
  • Back pockets that are slightly smaller and placed higher to lift the visual center of the butt upward
  • Stretch denim with recovery that holds shape after sitting instead of bagging out
  • Light wash or whiskering on the back, where the contrast and fading create depth that suggests more dimension
  • A center-back seam that runs vertically through the seat area, creating the illusion of a divide between cheeks and adding visual depth

Skirts and dresses

  • Peplum tops with fitted skirts because the peplum adds volume at the hip-butt area
  • Ruched or gathered fabric at the back creates texture that suggests more shape
  • Structured fabrics that hold their own shape rather than clinging to a flat surface

What to avoid

  • Very thin, clingy fabric that conforms to the flat shape and shows the lack of curve
  • Back pockets placed too low because they drag the visual center downward and emphasize flatness

Square Butt: What Works

A square butt benefits from details that create roundness in the side-to-side dimension.

Jeans and pants

  • Curved yoke seams that round out the top of the back panel
  • Back pockets angled inward so the diagonal line creates the impression of a narrower center and rounder sides
  • Dark wash on the sides with slightly lighter treatment through the center creates contrast that reads as roundness
  • High-rise to lengthen the butt area and create more visual space for the shape

Skirts and dresses

  • A-line skirts that flare from the hip add roundness to the lower half
  • Wrap dresses that cinch at the waist and create diagonal lines across the hip area
  • Circle skirts that drape in soft curves from the waist

What to avoid

  • Horizontal seams across the widest part because they emphasize the square width
  • Straight-across yoke seams that reinforce the boxy shape

Heart-Shaped Butt: What Works

A heart-shaped butt is fuller at the bottom, so the proportions need balancing between the narrower top and wider base.

Jeans and pants

  • Mid-rise works better than high-rise because the lower fullness is where you want the focus, not the waist
  • Back pockets centered or placed slightly lower to match where the fullness actually is
  • Wider leg openings (bootcut, flare) balance the bottom-heavy shape with width at the ankle
  • Stretch fabric that follows the curve in the lower half without gapping at the top

Skirts and dresses

  • Fit-and-flare dresses that are fitted through the waist and flare from mid-hip complement the wider bottom
  • A-line skirts that mirror the natural taper from narrow top to wider bottom

What to avoid

  • Skinny jeans that taper to a very narrow ankle because the contrast between the full bottom and narrow leg can look unbalanced
  • Very high-waisted pants that create too much length in the top of the butt where there is less fullness

V-Shaped Butt: What Works

A V-shaped butt is wider at the top (near the hips) and narrower at the bottom. Clothes that add visual volume to the lower glute area bring the proportions into balance.

Jeans and pants

  • High-rise to define the waist and create a clean starting point
  • Back pockets placed lower and slightly larger to add visual weight to the lower area
  • Lighter wash or fading in the lower cheek area to draw the eye down
  • Straight-leg or bootcut to balance the wider hip with a wider leg

Skirts and dresses

  • Pencil skirts that end at the knee to show the taper from hip to thigh
  • Structured skirts with darting that adds shape at the lower hip

What to avoid

  • Wide-leg pants that start flaring from the hip because they add more width at the already-wide top
  • Horizontal details at the hip level that emphasize the widest point

Underwear by Butt Shape

Round: seamless thong or bikini. Flat: boy shorts with light padding or shaping.

Square: bikini cut. Heart: hipster or thong.

V-shape: high-waisted brief.
Match the underwear to the shape for a smooth base.

Round: Seamless underwear that does not create panty lines and does not compress the curve. A thong or seamless bikini works best.

Flat: Boy shorts or underwear with light shaping or padding in the lower cheek area can add subtle curve. High-waisted shaping underwear with built-in lift creates a rounder base for pants to follow.

Square: A bikini cut that sits in the center of each cheek rather than across it avoids creating a line that emphasizes the square shape.

Heart-shaped: A hipster cut that follows the natural curve of the lower butt without cutting into the fullness. A thong works for pants where panty lines are a concern.

V-shaped: High-waisted underwear that provides a smooth line from the wide hip down to the narrower lower area.

The Universal Rules

No matter your butt shape, these apply:

Stretch denim beats rigid denim. Stretch follows your shape.

Rigid denim holds its own shape, which is probably not your shape.

Rise matters more than brand. The right rise for your shape transforms cheap jeans into flattering jeans.

The wrong rise makes expensive jeans look bad.

Back pocket placement is the most underrated detail. Most people never think about it, but the pockets frame the butt the way a picture frame holds a photograph.

The wrong frame ruins a good picture.

Worth Trying

If you want a pair of jeans specifically designed to lift and shape, the IUGA Butt Lifting High Waisted Jeans have a V-shaped back seam that creates a natural lift without padding.

They are stretch denim with 4-way movement, which makes them a good option for flat or square shapes that benefit from added dimension.

Around $25.

For leggings that do something similar, the Heathyoga Scrunch Butt Lifting Leggings use a V-shaped seam and compression fabric to sculpt and lift.

High-waisted with pockets, under $20.

A solid base layer under jeans, or worn on their own.
