How to Pack for a Beach Vacation (5 Outfits, 2 Swimsuits, 7 kg)

Pulling out a 25-kg roller suitcase for a 7-day beach trip is the first sign you have over-thought the trip and under-trusted the resort.

Beach vacations are the easiest packing scenario in travel.

The climate is consistent, the activities are limited, and the resort already owns most of the bulky items.

The carry-on packs at 7 kg with everything you actually need, and the list below covers it kit by kit.

From beach trips ranging from the south of Spain to the islands of Thailand and the coast of Vietnam, this carry-on list has not changed in years and packs identically every time.

TL;DR: 2 swimsuits + 5 outfits + 2 shoes + sun kit + after-sun + rash guard. Fits 7 kg carry-on for any 1-week beach trip.

The 5-outfit beach capsule

5 outfits cover any 1-week beach vacation, with rotation and laundry built in.

  • 2 lightweight tops (linen, cotton, or merino tees)
  • 1 button-down shirt or blouse for dinner
  • 1 pair of shorts or lightweight pants
  • 1 sundress or coverup that doubles as beach-to-dinner

Stick to a 2-color palette (sand + navy, or sand + white) so every top works with every bottom.

The 1 sundress doubles up as a beach coverup in the morning and dresses up for dinner with a different pair of sandals or a layer.

For trips longer than a week, the same 5-outfit capsule works with one in-trip laundry session at the hotel sink or local laundromat.

Cotton dries in 12 hours, synthetic blends in 4.

Swimsuits (2 is the right number)

Pack 2 swimsuits, not 4 or 5.

One on the body for the day, one drying on the hotel-room hook from yesterday’s swim.

Synthetic blends dry in 2 to 3 hours, so the rotation always works.

Skip cotton swimsuits, since they take 8+ hours to dry in humid beach climates.

Beach vacation essentials with sunglasses, hat, and sandals

Shoes (2 pairs)

Two pairs cover any beach vacation: one for the beach, one for everywhere else.

  • Sandals or flip-flops: beach, pool, hotel walks, casual dinners
  • Walking shoes (sneakers or low boots, worn on the plane): the airport, sightseeing days, any non-beach activity

Quick-dry sandals (Teva, Chaco, Birkenstock EVA) handle wet feet without retaining moisture.

Skip dress shoes unless the trip includes a wedding or formal event.

Most beach destinations are casual at every dinner spot.

The sun protection kit

Sun damage is the most preventable beach vacation injury and the most under-packed item category.

  • SPF 50 mineral sunscreen, 100 ml or under (or buy at destination)
  • SPF lip balm
  • Wide-brim hat (packable straw or technical fabric)
  • UV-blocking sunglasses (polarized for water glare)
  • Long-sleeve rash guard for snorkeling or extended sun exposure
  • After-sun gel or aloe for the inevitable mild burn

Reef-safe sunscreen is required by law in Hawaii, Mexico, and parts of the Caribbean.

Check the label for “no oxybenzone or octinoxate.”

The CDC’s sun exposure travel page covers tropical-destination-specific UV recommendations.

The often-forgotten beach essentials

These items are small, light, and routinely missed.

  • Reusable water bottle (refill at the hotel, skip the resort markup)
  • Dry bag or zip-top plastic bag for phone and wallet at the beach
  • Foldable beach tote (the hotel towel and sunscreen go in this)
  • Small first-aid kit: bandaids, antiseptic, blister patches, antihistamine for jellyfish or bug bites
  • Insect repellent (DEET 30 percent or picaridin) for sandflies and mosquitoes
  • Earplugs for snoring partners or noisy beach bars at night

Most hotels provide beach towels, so do not pack one.

The dry bag is the highest-value item on this list.

A wet phone in the bottom of a beach bag is a 6-hour repair detour and a stressful afternoon you did not budget for.

Toiletries (the beach version)

Standard travel toiletry kit plus 3 beach-specific additions.

  • Standard kit: toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, moisturizer, deodorant
  • Beach addition 1: extra deodorant (humidity goes through it twice as fast)
  • Beach addition 2: leave-in conditioner or hair oil for chlorine-and-saltwater hair recovery
  • Beach addition 3: large microfiber towel as an alternative to the hotel towel for sandy days

Use a clear hanging toiletry bag with mesh pockets so the kit stays organized through the wet-and-sandy beach week.

Electronics for a beach vacation

Keep electronics minimal. The beach is hard on devices.

  • Phone + charging cable (in a dry bag at the beach)
  • Universal travel adapter
  • Small power bank for long beach days
  • E-reader for poolside reading (Kindle Paperwhite is sand and water resistant)
  • Skip the laptop unless you are working remotely

Sand kills speakers and headphone jacks.

Use Bluetooth headphones and accept that wired ones may not survive the trip.

What to wear on the plane

Wear the bulkiest items on the plane to save bag weight.

Walking shoes, jeans or comfortable pants, a layer (cardigan or fleece for the cold cabin), wide-brim hat carried in hand or worn.

The hat is the awkward item that does not pack well.

Either wear it or use the carry-on as a hat-shaped barrier above the rest of the contents.

What to leave at home

The beach-specific over-pack list:

  • Beach umbrella (rent at the destination if needed)
  • Snorkel gear (most snorkel tours include it; rent if you want your own)
  • 5+ swimsuits (“just in case”)
  • Heels or formal shoes for a casual destination
  • Hair dryer (every hotel has one)
  • Beach chairs and beach toys (most resorts and beaches provide them)

Per the TSA What Can I Bring tool, all of the standard beach kit items are allowed in carry-on, including the under-100-ml SPF and the rash guard.
