What to Do If You Do Not Have Enough Clean Clothes to Pack

The trip is tomorrow and you do not have enough clean clothes for it. The laundry hamper is full, the closet is half-empty.

You are about to wash everything tonight at midnight. Or buy new clothes you do not need.

Neither is the answer.

TL;DR You only need 5 clean tops, 3 clean bottoms, 5 underwear, and 5 socks for almost any 5 to 7 day trip. Wash that small set tonight, plan one mid-trip laundry stop, you are done.

My viewers have taught me as much as I’ve taught them, the night-before laundry is small, focused, and finished by the time my coffee is.

The exact small load.

5 tops, 3 bottoms (one of which you wear during travel so really 2 to wash), 5 underwear, 5 socks, 1 sleepwear, 1 swim if relevant.

That is one small load of laundry. About 90 minutes wash + dry.

Mid-trip laundry stops.

Plan one sink wash on day 4 of any trip longer than 4 days. 15 minutes of work, dries overnight on a hanger.

This means tonight’s small load covers a 7+ day trip without needing more clothes clean.

Why “wash everything” is the wrong instinct.

Washing everything makes you think you need everything. You do not. The “everything” pile contains many items that should not come on the trip anyway.

Wash the small set. Pack the small set. Skip the rest.

The system that defines the small set.

The 10-step Space-Saving Travel Packing Method I built over those 12+ years of traveling half the year always tells you exactly which 5 tops and 3 bottoms.

Even with no clean clothes left, the right small load gets you through tomorrow’s trip.

Wash the small set. Skip the everything-pile.
