How to Pack Gifts and Souvenirs When Your Bag Is Already Full

You bought the souvenirs.

The bag is already full.

The flight is in 12 hours.

You are about to either ship them home, leave them, or panic-buy a second bag.

TL;DR The cleanest fix is a packable duffel as your spare. Carried empty inside the carry-on at the start of the trip, expanded at the end to hold the new items.

Since I started the Organizing TV channel back in 2020, the packable duffel is the only piece of “extra gear” I always travel with.

The packable duffel.

A 30 to 40 liter foldable duffel weighs about 200 grams and folds to the size of a paperback. They cost $20 to $40 online.

Carried empty in the bottom of your carry-on. Pulled out the night before departure and packed with souvenirs.

You return home with carry-on plus the packable duffel as a personal item, or vice versa.

If you do not have a packable duffel.

Buy one at the destination’s biggest supermarket or sporting goods store. About $10 to $20.

Cheaper than a checked bag fee, lighter than the alternatives, and you have it for the next trip.

Trim the original bag if needed.

Wear extra clothes home (jacket, pants) instead of packing them.

Leave behind cheap toiletries and worn-out items.

Make space for the things you actually want to bring back.

The system that prevents the panic.

The 10-step Space-Saving Travel Packing Method I built over those 12+ years of traveling half the year always reserves the bottom of the bag for a packable duffel slot.

Souvenir-day stops being a panic.

Always carry a packable duffel. Souvenirs come home.
