Your suitcase is open.
Everything is in it.
And it will not close.
You’re supposed to leave in the morning.
The bag won’t zip.
You’ve already pushed down, sat on it, tried again.
The bag isn’t the problem. The process is.
This is one of the most common moments I help travelers through. It happens because you’re making decisions AND packing at the same time, which is twice the work under half the time.
Here’s the fix I give my students when they hit this exact moment.
The 3-pile sort (10 minutes)
Take everything out.
All of it.
Spread it on the bed so you can see it.
Now sort into three piles:
- Pile 1: Definitely wearing. Items with a specific day or occasion in mind.
- Pile 2: Maybe. Backup outfits. Extra shoes. The “what if” layer.
- Pile 3: Just in case. Things you’re bringing out of fear, not plan.
Remove Pile 3 completely. This is the pile your bag cannot close because of.
Now look at Pile 2. For each item, ask one question: did I wear something like this on my last trip?
If the answer is no, it goes.
Repack Pile 1 using tight rolls instead of folds. Tuck socks and underwear into shoes and gaps.
The bag will close.
Almost everything in Pile 3 can be replaced at your destination anyway. A t-shirt, extra socks, toiletries you forgot.
Stores exist everywhere. People stress out about this stuff way too much.
The items you truly can’t replace (medication, passport, glasses, your own charger) are tiny. They’re never what’s keeping the bag from closing.
This fix works tonight. But the reason you ended up here is that the earlier steps didn’t happen first.
In the bigger packing system I’ve built over 12 years of traveling half the year, there’s an order: pick the bag, map the trip, build a capsule, layer it, then pack.
By the time you open the suitcase, the cutting is already done. There’s nothing to remove because you only packed what the plan called for.
The full system takes about 2 hours. You can run it tonight and be packed before bed.
