Europe uses the same liquids rule as the U.S., just in metric units. The limits are:
- 100 ml per container (equal to 3.4 oz)
- 1 liter clear resealable bag (equal to 1 U.S. quart)
- 1 bag per passenger
The packaging must be transparent and resealable. Most European airports provide clear bags near the security area if a traveler forgets one.
A few European airports have rolled out new CT scanners that do not require liquids to be removed from the bag at all. London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, and several German airports are phasing in these scanners, but until the rollout is complete the 100 ml rule still applies at most security checkpoints.
The rule applies to liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols including toothpaste, lotions, and drinks bought before security.
