Toothpaste counts as a liquid under TSA rules. Even though it is a paste rather than a pourable fluid, TSA classifies toothpaste alongside gels, pastes, and creams as a liquid for screening purposes.
The rules for carry-on:
- Container size: 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less
- All liquids fit in a single quart-sized clear resealable bag
- One bag per passenger
An important trap: a tube labeled 6 oz counts as 6 oz even if it is half empty. TSA reads the tube label, not the actual liquid volume inside. Half-empty tubes get confiscated.
Alternatives for carry-on only travel:
- Toothpaste tablets (solid, not subject to the rule)
- Buy a 3.4 oz travel tube
- Pack full-size in checked bag
