International flights require more steps than domestic flights and larger aircraft. Three hours covers the extra time each step takes:
- Passport verification. International check-in counters verify every passenger’s passport, visa, and sometimes onward-travel documentation.
- Earlier boarding. International flights on wide-body aircraft begin boarding 45 to 60 minutes before departure, versus 30 minutes for domestic.
- Larger terminals. International terminals have longer walking distances between security and gates.
- Stricter check-in cutoff. Most airlines close international check-in 60 minutes before departure.
- More passengers. A 787 or A380 takes longer to board than a 737.
The 3-hour rule is a buffer. Two hours is the minimum that works in a smooth situation. The third hour absorbs traffic delays, long security lines, and unexpected issues.
For TSA PreCheck or Global Entry holders flying out of a familiar airport, 2 hours is usually enough.
