How to Pack for a Wedding Trip in a Carry-On

You are flying to a wedding. The dress, the shoes, the accessories, plus normal clothes for the rest of the trip all need to fit.

Checking a bag feels like the safe option for something this important. But you do not have to.

After 17+ million people have watched my packing videos, I have done multiple wedding trips with carry-on only. Last year I was a best man and traveled with just a personal item (the under-seat bag). The dress is the only special-handling item.

Choose wrinkle-resistant fabric.

The fabric decides everything. Wrinkle-free fabric, jersey, or polyblends travel very well. Anything steamable works.

Heavy silks, really structured fabrics, or taffeta only make sense if you can hang the garment bag the whole trip. Most carry-on flights do not allow that, so avoid them unless you are buying an extra seat for the garment.

Pack the dress last, on top.

Roll the garment up loosely. Never fold it flat or heavy. Ideally place something soft between the folds (a shirt or something similar) to reduce wrinkles even further.

Pack it last, at the very top of the bag. The further down it is, the more it will crease. Do not let anything else sit on it.

Steam on arrival.

Fifteen minutes in a really hot, steamy bathroom with some very light stretching as you hang up the garment removes almost any wrinkles a rolled dress picks up.

Alternatively, a little travel steamer does absolute magic and takes up very little space in a carry-on. This is the safer option if you want to be 100% sure there are zero wrinkles. But realistically, hanging and stretching works quite well. You should feel confident about it.

One pair of dress shoes.

Bring one pair of dress shoes. Ideally wear them on travel day if they are at least remotely walkable.

Otherwise pack them in a plastic bag at the bottom of your bag (not at the top like the dress). Just make sure they do not get squished.

Stuff socks and underwear into the shoes. This saves space and maintains the structure of the shoes, preventing them from getting squished together.

Jewelry and accessories.

Jewelry and accessories go in a small pouch inside your personal item or carry-on. Never in checked baggage. These are the pieces you cannot replace at the destination.

If it is something you absolutely cannot replace, the personal item is the best way to keep it safe.

The honest limit.

One honest note because I do not want to oversell this: a full-blown ball gown, dresses with heavy beading, or serious structure, that is genuinely not a rolled-and-steamed situation.

If that is your outfit, an extra purchased seat to hang it or even a professional wedding dress shipping service is definitely the right call. That is not a failure of the method. This protocol works fantastically for fabrics that can travel well while folded.

The rest of the trip.

Everything else uses your normal carry-on rotation: 5 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 layer. Same packing as any other 4 to 5 day trip.
