You finished packing. Now you are worried the bag is over the weight limit. The flight is in a few hours.
You can find out for certain in 60 seconds before you leave home, instead of finding out at the counter.
Step on a bathroom scale holding the bag, then step on alone, subtract. The number is exact within half a pound. Do this before any worry-driven repack.
From 6 years of teaching this on YouTube, the at-home scale check is the single highest-value 60 seconds of the entire packing process.
Here is a faster way to know before you ever get to the airport, no scale needed:
The 60-second weight check.
Step 1: weigh yourself on a normal bathroom scale. Note the number.
Step 2: pick up the packed bag and step on again. Note the number.
Step 3: subtract step 1 from step 2. That is your bag weight.
Accurate to within about half a pound. Free. 60 seconds.
What to do if you are over.
Move 2 to 5 pounds to your personal item (rarely weighed). Wear the heaviest items on the plane. Pull non-essentials out completely.
Recheck weight. Repeat until under the limit.
What “under the limit” means.
Aim for 5 pounds under the airline’s stated maximum. Scales at the counter sometimes read heavier than yours. Water absorption en route adds weight too.
5-pound buffer absorbs both.
The system that builds the check in.
The 10-step Space-Saving Travel Packing Method I built over those 12+ years of traveling half the year includes a Step 9 weight check before zipping the bag.
